Roots of the Self is an interactive sculpture installation that explores human identity, collective
memory, and our natural connection to the natural world. The artwork illustrates how humans and
trees are similar in that they both develop, provide, support, and quietly bear the weight of the earth.
In the center of the sculpture, a human figure rises from tree roots, its body intertwined with
structures that resemble upward, extending branches. The circular platform of the sculpture is
inspired by the khadi charkha wheel, which stands for continuity, life cycles, and shared labor. The
visible roots that extend below the platform serve to ground the figure and underline the notion
that identity is shaped by what lies beneath the surface.
